Amy McGrath is running in the Democratic primary to take on Rep. Andy Barr in Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District. The former Marine combat aviator completed tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq and served as a Marine Corps Congressional Fellow in J Street PAC-endorsee Rep. Susan Davis’s office. She also served as the Pentagon’s Marine Corps’ Liaison to the State Department and most recently taught at the U.S. Naval Academy.
As a Marine, McGrath has operated in the Middle East and worked personally to maintain the close military and intelligence collaboration between the US and Israel. She understands that the US has vested interests in the region, as well as close ties to Israel and the Palestinians, and should thus be involved in brokering negotiations between the two parties toward a two-state solution. In her view, such an agreement is fundamental to Israel’s security.
McGrath has studied nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction comprehensively and instructed a relevant course at the US Naval Academy. As such, she has studied the Iran nuclear agreement closely. She agrees with members of the US national security establishment that Iran is in compliance with the terms of the deal and that withdrawing from the deal would not be in the US’s security interests. While she supports maintaining the deal, she is also in favor of non-nuclear sanctions that target Iran’s other destabilizing activities in the region.
