Brendan Kelly is the Democratic nominee to challenge Republican Rep. Mike Bost in Illinois’ 12th congressional district. Kelly served in the Navy before becoming an Assistant State’s Attorney in Illinois in 2010. In 2012, he became the State’s Attorney for St. Clair County. In this role, he has prosecuted pharmaceutical companies for their role in the opioid crisis, and he has made it a priority to combat sexual assault and domestic violence cases.
During his service in the Navy, Kelly was stationed for a time in Tel Aviv, and he studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. While stationed in Israel, he also worked with the Israel Defense Forces. Through this experience, he gained a keen understanding of the importance of the US and Israel’s strategic relationship and the security challenges that Israel faces. Because of this, he is committed to working toward achieving a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians, and he sees an important role for the US to play in these negotiations. Kelly also understands that a nuclear-armed Iran would pose a serious threat to Israeli security and regional stability. For this reason, he will work to support and maintain implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement if elected to Congress. While he decisively opposes Iran’s support for terrorism, he believes that this opposition should not impede or undermine progress that has been made on denuclearization.
