Rep. Raul Ruiz was first elected to Congress in 2012, representing California’s 36th congressional district, which includes several communities in the Inland Empire. Prior to running for Congress, Rep. Ruiz was a practicing physician, and he was the first Latino to receive three graduate degrees from Harvard University. Congressman Ruiz won re-election in 2014, 2016, and 2018 and serves on the powerful House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
Congressman Ruiz is a strong supporter of J Street’s pro-peace, pro-Israel initiatives in Congress. In 2017, he co-signed the Price-Dent letter, urging continued diplomacy with Iran and he was a strong voice for the Give Diplomacy a Chance initiative. Dr. Ruiz was a vocal supporter of the Obama administration’s efforts to craft the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to address Iran’s nuclear program and he also signed a 2015 letter drafted by Congresswoman Schakowsky in support of a diplomatic solution with Iran. He has been a frequent supporter of J Street’s legislative priorities, and he is a cosponsor of House Resolution 326, which reaffirms Congress’s commitment to two-state solution and opposes settlement expansion and annexation.
