Jeanne Shaheen is the first woman in US history to be elected both governor and US senator. Shaheen served as governor of New Hampshire from 1997 through 2003. She was elected to the Senate in 2008 after serving as director of Harvard’s Institute of Politics. Before entering elected office, Shaheen taught in New Hampshire, owned a small-business and directed two successful New Hampshire presidential primary campaigns. In the Senate, Shaheen serves on the Foreign Relations, Appropriations, Armed Services and Small Business Committees. She has been a leader in the Senate on national security issues and a vocal proponent of US leadership toward a two-state agreement.
