Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont has served in the Senate for 40 years and is currently the most senior Senator holding the title of President Pro Tempore Emeritus. Since being elected in 1975, Senator Leahy has made a name for himself in his tenure as chairman of both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Agricultural Committee. He has also served as Chairman or Ranking Member of the Department of State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee for more than two decades. Senator Leahy firmly believes in Israel’s right to exist and its right to protect itself, and has consistently supported aid to Israel as well as the Iron Dome. He actively supports US leadership in the quest for peace in the Middle East and a two-state solution noting that the lack of a Palestinian state puts Israel at risk, and that settlements in the West Bank must stop.
