Rep. Steve Cohen was first elected to represent Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District in 2006 as the state’s first Jewish congressman. Before running for Congress, Rep. Cohen served in the Tennessee State Senate for over twenty years and served one term as a Shelby County commissioner. His family has lived in Memphis for four generations.
Rep. Cohen, a seven-time JStreetPAC endorsee, has been a strong friend of the pro-Israel, pro-peace movement. He has consistently supported J Street-backed initiatives in Congress and has taken a leading role in encouraging his colleagues to do the same. In the last Congress, he co-led the Khanna-Eshoo-Cohen letter, which called for increased transparency on US aid to Israel to ensure it isn’t used to support demolitions of Palestinian homes in the West Bank. He was also an early cosponsor of House Resolution 326, which reaffirmed Congress’s commitment to the two-state solution and opposed settlement expansion and annexation.
