Sen. Tom Udall is New Mexico’s senior senator and was first elected to the Senate in 2008, when he handily defeated Rep. Steve Pearce to win New Mexico’s open Senate seat. Before winning election to the Senate, Udall represented New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional District in the House for ten years and served for eight years as the state’s attorney general. Udall serves on the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, where he has been a passionate voice for sensible US foreign policy in the Middle East. Udall was an early, vocal opponent of the Iraq War and proponent of the transition to an Afghan led effort and drawdown of US combat forces in Afghanistan. He has shown strong support for Israel by consistently supporting foreign aid, and advocating in favor of US-led efforts to broker a permanent Israeli-Palestinian peace through a two state solution.
